Stay Salty!

You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled by men. ~Matt 5:13 - Mk 9:50; Lk 14:34,35 13 Mk 9:50; Lk 14:34-35
How could salt be that valuable? Listen to this. 40 million tons are required each year to fill our needs. In ancient Greece, a far-flung trade involving the exchange of salt for slaves gave rise to the _expression, "...not worth his salt." Special salt rations were given to Roman soldiers which were known as "Solarium Argentums" the forerunner of the English word "Salary." Thousands of Napoleon’s troops died during his retreat from Moscow because their wounds would not heal from lack of salt. The human body contains about 4oz. of salt. Without enough of it, muscles won’t contract, blood won’t circulate, food won’t digest and the heart won’t beat a beat. Without a doubt, salt is the essence of life. And Jesus said, "Ye are the salt of the earth..."

1. Salt adds flavoring! It doesn’t take a lot of salt to flavor your stew. If you add too much salt, it becomes inedible. Salt is an interesting mineral. I’m told that the saltiest product on the McDonald’s menu is not the fries, but the milk shakes because salt makes a sweet thing taste sweeter. Too much salt, by itself, can make you sick. Yet without salt, you would die. When you talk about salt as flavoring for food, salt must be used in the right quantity.

If you call yourself by "HIS" name, you ought to be able to bring the best flavor out of people!

2. Salt melts ice! One of the interesting things about salt is that when it’s used, it loses itself. You don’t see salt in your food because it makes its contribution and then it’s gone. When it’s used in various chemical processes, it dissipates after fulfilling its purpose. Salt used on icy highways makes winter travel safe and then it disappears. In the same ways, Christians who are the salt of the earth don’t hesitate to give of themselves without needing to be seen. As we take on the character of salt, one of two things is going to happen: (1) our conduct will help to melt cold hearts or (2) our godly character will bring an indictment against the sinner who elects to turn us out (ALL ALL ALL ALL have sinned and fallen short!)

3. Salt heals wounds! Ancient remedies for lacerated wounds included pouring salt into open wounds as an antiseptic. Many people are cut to the quick by brokenness and hurts and the only remedy is the character of a salty Christian! Instead of tearing folks down, we need to build them up! Instead of kicking folks out, we need to pull them in! Instead of stabbing folks in the back, we need to pat them on the back! Instead of cussing folks, we need to bless them!

Some of the same people who lift Holy hands on Sunday, won't give a kind hand Monday - Saturday!

Some of the same people who praise God on Sunday, won't speak to you in the Parking Lot after Worship!

Some of the same people who try to tell YOU what to do, household is more mixed up than a "Feather in a Whirlwind"!

What a good post! I really enjoyed reading it...well, skimming it actually since I have a very short attention span while at the same time being quite longwinded, somehow.
