Just Jesus

Colossians 2:8-10

From a dank, poorly lit jail cell in Rome, the itinerant Elder from Tarsus writes a Pastoral Letter to the church folks at Colossae. Hmmmm. . .did I say jail? Yes! This member of the aristocracy,

Circumcised the eighth day
Of the stock of Israel
Of the tribe of Benjamin,
An Hebrew of Hebrews
As touching the law, a Pharisee,
Concerning zeal, persecuting the church
Touching the righteousness which is in the law. . . .blameless!

Here he sits. . .in the brig, in the cooler, in the penitentiary, on “lockdown”, and in the hoosegow!

Reverend Doctor Paul had to explain to his church members that angels were just angels. The congregation at Colossae believed that angels were divine creatures, less than God, but divine, who performed different functions. There was an angel for the household, another angel for the farm, another angel for the livestock, etc., etc. These angels were the conduit. . .the medium between God and men. It is by this train of thought, that you had to depend on the power of the angels, rather than the “Master’s Hand”. Well, modern day saints do the same! On Sunday, we worship a God that we’ve never seen. . . and turn right around on Monday, and pick up the “HORROR”-Scope section. We worship our cars, our clothes, our jewelry, our church building, our homes, our children, our spouse, our place of employment, our checking accounts, our stock portfolio!

Dr. Paul tells us, that all of this stuff. . .is just chicken scratch and flea fodder! There’s only one inexhaustible source that we can continuously go to. . .and that is Jesus Christ. The Hymn Writer reminds us: “The world is hungry, for the Living Bread! Here’s the answer Jesus gave the key! Said if I. . .If I be lifted up from the earth, will draw all men unto me!” With Jesus, we need no substitutes, no “fillers”, no additives, no preservatives, no “energy drinks”! Just Jesus! That’s all you need!

You don’t need somebody to send you a prayer cloth!

Jesus said, “And whatever things you ask in prayer, believing, you will receive." - Just Jesus!

You don’t need somebody to pour holy water on you!

Jesus said, “but whoever drinks of the water that I shall give him will never thirst!” – Just Jesus!

Jesus is all we need!

He starts with us during childhood – “Suffer not the little children to come unto me.”

He’s with us during adulthood – “Come unto me, all ye that labor and heavy laden, and I’ll give you rest!”

He’s the lighthouse for those who are lost – “The Son of man is come to seek and to save that which was lost!”

He finds us in the muck and mire of sin – “Go, and sin no more!”

He pays us a House Call when we are sick – “Wilt thou be made whole?”

He’s there when our friends aren’t around – “I’ll never leave you. . .nor forsake you!”

He’s our tour guide across the Jordan River when Death pays us a visit – “In my Father’s house. . .is a place for you”!

Just Jesus!
Just Jesus!
Just Jesus!

Glory Hallelujah. . . . Just Jesus!
